We need more women in Football leadership
Female leadership is gaining ground in football, but real change begins when we challenge the biases that still limit who holds decision-making roles.

The 2024 World Football Summit placed a strong emphasis on female leadership, with a notable increase in the participation of women across various panels and discussions. In fact, 37% of the speakers this year were women, highlighting the summit's commitment to breaking barriers and promoting gender diversity within the football industry. This growth marks a significant step forward in ensuring women's voices are heard and their contributions recognized at the highest levels of football leadership.
However, while these efforts are commendable, the work is far from finished. Despite the momentum, unconscious bias remains a barrier in the football industry when it comes to promoting women to leadership positions. Historically and socially, many of these roles have been male-dominated, which makes it all the more important to address biases that continue to influence decisions regarding women in leadership.
Raise Awareness: Recognizing that unconscious bias exists is the first step. Regular training and workshops can help to identify and address these biases.
Structured Decision-Making: Implementing clear, data-driven criteria for hiring, promotions, and project assignments can help minimize the influence of bias. By focusing on objective performance metrics instead of gut feelings or stereotypes, organizations can ensure fairness and accountability
Promote Diversity in Decision-Making: Actively include diverse voices in leadership discussions and decision-making processes. This ensures that different perspectives are heard and reduces the risk of favoring those who are similar.
Mentorship and Sponsorship: Create mentorship programs where women in leadership roles can guide and sponsor upcoming female talent. This helps break down barriers and encourages more women to step into leadership positions
Women bring a unique perspective to leadership roles in football. Their presence is essential, not only to represent a more inclusive view but also to bring forward qualities like empathy, collaboration, and a broader vision of growth. As more women step into these roles, they pave the way for future generations, creating new role models who embody resilience and leadership from a fresh, diverse standpoint.
